Tips for Planning an Upstate NY Wine Tour in the Hudson Valley
Pick a Date
As with any event, choosing a date is your very first task when it comes to planning a NY wine tour. Coordinate with friends, check your schedules, and set aside a full day for exploring all the Hudson Valley wine scene has to offer.
Choose Your Favorite Local Wineries
Make a list of the Hudson Valley wineries you’ve been itching to check out. Whether you have a few favorites you’d like to revisit or you’ve heard great things about a new establishment, you’ll want to start with a comprehensive list.
Look at A Map
One of the biggest rookie mistakes you can make when it comes to planning a wine tour is not looking at a map. Ideally, you’ll spend most of your time on your wine your tasting wine – not driving around between wineries.
Looking at a map will help you figure out where wineries are located in relation to one another. It might not be possible to hit all of the wineries you have on your list, but checking a map will help you to figure out what the most feasible, logical route is so you can visit as many as possible. (Expert tip: Plan on visiting no more than 5-7 wineries during your wine tour.)
Plan Your Route
Once you’ve checked the map, plan out the route you’d like to take. You’ll want to make notes on the order in which you plan to visit the wineries on your list, and be sure you have directions to guide you between wineries. You may also want to note which wineries you’d be most okay with skipping if you end up running short on time.
Some wineries require you to all ahead for a reservation, especially if you are going to be arriving with a large group. Be sure to look into this and call ahead, if necessary, to give wineries a heads-up about when you’ll be showing up for your tasting.
If you want everyone in your party to be able to partake in wine tasting, you’ll likely need to hire someone to drive you around.

The objective of a wine tour is to spend the whole day enjoying the company of friends and sampling some of the best wines the region has to offer – while avoiding a wicked hangover the next day. As a result, it’s incredibly important to pack snacks and plenty of water. Be sure you have plenty of food to go around, and make a conscious effort to stay well-hydrated throughout the day.
